What is a normal period?

By Tempdrop team

A menstrual period (menstruation) is the shedding of the uterine lining formed throughout the last cycle.

A "true period" is a bleeding event that occurs around two weeks after ovulation. The first day of full flow is considered to be cycle day one. Other bleeding events are known as intermenstrual bleeds and do not signal the start of a new cycle.

Some common characteristics of a normal period are...

  • 3-7 days of bleeding with at least 1-2 days being medium to heavy volume
  • 30-60mm of blood volume loss
  • Color variation from bright red to dark brown
  • Mild to medium uterine cramping can occur, especially during heavy flow days

Very heavy blood loss, long or short periods and severe pain/cramping (that disrupts normal activities) can be symptoms of underlying health concerns. Consulting with a healthcare provider may be a valuable for those who have concerns about their period health.
