On the Path to Becoming a Health and Sexuality Educator with Tempdrop

I felt the need to introduce myself and let you know a little bit about who I am and how I discovered fertility awareness.

Some of you might relate to my journey and to some questions I had dealt with along the way. If you have a similar story, or anything you'd like to share or add, regarding my post- feel free to add your comment below!

So my name is Tal Ron and even though I like to think of myself as a critical thinker, there are still some things that I have done (and still do) without thinking too much, fully understanding, or asking “why?”

One of those things was the pill. For five and a half years every single night, I automatically popped the pill. I didn’t get any clear or significant side effects from it and it helped me prevent pregnancy so I felt pretty liberated and satisfied.

One night, all of the sudden it struck me, I HAVEN’T OVULATED FOR ALMOST SIX YEARS! I then started thinking about how every single day for the past few years I had been taking something that plays with my hormones, that prevents me from having a real natural cycle, and disconnects me from my own body.

After having this epiphany, I started talking about it with my friends and then realized that so many young women feel the same way, helplessly following the only method of birth control offered to them. I went to consult with many doctors and gynecologists (five to be exact) about different alternatives and tried to explain how I felt.

Most of the doctors tried to convince me to take the pill (with advertisements for birth control pills sitting on their table) and, after arguing with them, they wished me luck with the baby. Some of them suggested the vaginal ring which isn't substantially different from the pill in the way it affects your body. Some suggested just to use condoms and some offered the copper IUD. I considered it but remained skeptical.

At the same time, I was training to be a sexuality and health educator. I learned a lot about the female body and about different methods of preventing pregnancy. I went deeper into the biology, as well as social gender issues, and, the deeper I went, the stronger I felt about my decision to come off the pill.

I began reading more and more material and got exposed to FAM, which to me sounded like the perfect solution: not only is it a hormone free solution, it connects women to their bodies and makes women (as well as their partners) more knowledgeable about their fertility, cycle, and health.

I started reading Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler and began to pursue the Fertility Awareness Method. I felt such freedom and was amazed by how little I knew about changes that happen in my body constantly depending on the day of the monthly cycle. 

The biggest obstacle to me was morning temping. First of all, I’m not a morning person. I don’t get 8 hours of sleep each night and wake up fresh at 7-8AM ready for a new day. THAT’S NOT ME! I usually go to bed late because those are my working hours and I wake up according to how I feel that specific morning (the voice in my head in those hours is very seductive and persuasive).

Even if I make a concerted effort to take my BBT at the same time each morning, I would also need to be very consistent and mark everything on the chart - for me, that's a lot!.

I found temping in the morning interesting, liberating, but also pretty demanding! I couldn't keep up with it and my charts weren't recognizable. I was pretty devastated. I talked to my mother about it, who, as much as she’d like grandchildren (and fast), wasn't too fond of the idea but was supportive about my responsible decisions. 

A few days after we talked, she saw something on TV about some new BBT tracking innovation that was raising money via crowdfunding. That was spring 2014. Now, I'm Tempdrop's Community Manager. Next week I'll discuss how exactly that came to be.
